CSL Group and Algoma Central Corporation sign an agreement to build a new generation of Kamsarmax type ocean-going self-unloading vessels

news-details

The CSL Group and Algoma Central Corporation, which together form the CSL International Shipping Pool, today announced the signing of an agreement to build four Kamsarmax-type self-unloaders at Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding Co, Ltd. These new vessels, ready to operate on methanol, will replace the Pool's oldest vessels and become the model for its next generation of ocean-going self-unloading vessels.

Two of the four jointly designed new vessels, with a capacity of 72,250 dwt, will be built for Algoma and the other two for CSL. Business partners have the option of building two additional ships.

"We are confidently reinvesting in a business that has served us well for many years, alongside our long-term partner, and with YAMIC, a shipyard with a proven track record of quality construction and respect delivery times for these specialty assets," said Gregg Ruhl, President and CEO of Algoma. “The Algoma and CSL teams have combined their decades of experience in this field to design the optimal vessel for Pool operations, while making further progress in reducing our carbon footprint. »

In line with Algoma and CSL's decarbonization efforts, this new vessel design exceeds EEDI Tier III requirements and includes Tier 3 engines. The new vessels are expected to be 40% more efficient than the older ones thanks to energy and optimizing cargo carrying capacity.

“This joint venture reflects our long-term commitment to serving our customers safely and sustainably with our Pool of Ocean Vessels,” said Louis Martel, President and CEO of CSL. “Designed with efficiency and versatility in mind, these new vessels will have the advantage of being interchangeable and able to adapt to all sectors of activity and all operating conditions. »

These new vessels will replace the Pool's three oldest vessels and increase the size of its fleet to 19. Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for July 2025 and will be an Algoma vessel. Subsequent deliveries are scheduled every three months.

Characteristics of new ships

  1. Designed on the basis of the fourth generation of the Kamsarmax hull with a loading capacity of 72,250 metric tons.
  2. Equipped with ready-to-operate methanol engines.
  3. Exceeds EEDI Tier III requirements and includes Tier 3 engines.
  4. Unloading capacity at a rate of 5,000 Mt per hour.
